PATEO and Huawei Reach Patent Cross-Licensing Agreement to Boost Development of Intelligent Vehicle Industry
Recently, PATEO CONNECT+ Technology (Shanghai) Corporation and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (hereinafter respectively referred to as “PATEO” and “Huawei”) announced the conclusion of an agreement on patent cross-licensing and related cooperation, covering the global patent licensing between both parties in the field of intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs, including those with wireless connectivity feature) and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI).
PATEO has thus become the first Tier 1 Internet of Vehicles (IoV) supplier in China that has obtained the licenses of SEPs (Standard Essential Patent, a patent that must be used to implement a technical standard) and a series of related technologies in communication area from Huawei, which means the automakers that use PATEO products no longer need to pay patent licensing fees duplicately.
With the integration of the Internet and communication technologies, among others, the industry chain of the entire automotive industry, especially that in the ICV field, is being gradually reshaped, with the original vertical extension evolving towards a network-structured development trend. This move will further strengthen the intellectual property (IP) superiority of both sides in the aforesaid fields.
